Unlock and Jailbreak

What are the above? How do you do it? Why would you do it? Would I get in trouble with ATandT?

covered many times on many forums, they are 2 totally different things to start with

jailbreak - allows users to install 3rd party apps on idevice

unlock - allows user to use a different service provider (don't know how well this works in usa)
