Download has slowed to a crawl for me.. Also just an FYI the iOS page on Apple.com doesn't say "Coming soon" any longer: Apple - iOS 5 - 200+ new features for iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch.

I didn't have much on mine, so I didn't care. It was the only way I could get it to work, but that doesn't mean it's the only way. I read elsewhere that OTA would work, but obviously that's not working yet.
