Help unlocking 3GS

Goodnight. I have an iphone 3gs that is on firmware 3.1.3 with baseband 05.12.01. I wanted to upgrade to a newer firmware but I dont have the slightest clue as to what I am supposed to do. can anyone help me please? I bought it unlocked and I am on the tmobile network.

You need to update to a custom 5.0.1 firmware using sn0wbreeze and then you need to install ultrasn0w and the ultrasn0w fix for 5.0.1 in Cydia

I have been trying all day to download sn0wbreeze but i am unable to open the application. I download from the ih8sn0w website. Am i doing something wrong? I am on windows.

You just double click the .exe file like you would to open any other program.

help, if I update to 5.0.1, boot tether it then network unlock it with ultrasn0w, then remove Cydia using RedSnow when booting, will I be able to reboot my iDevice next time without doing the tethered boot?

No, you must remain jailbroken in order to be unlocked.
