Health Canada has officially approved Apple Watch’s new sleep apnea detection feature, available on the Apple Watch Series 10, Series 9, and Apple Watch Ultra 2 running watchOS 11. The feature, which launched earlier this month in the U.S. and over 150 other regions, is now authorized for use in Canada. However, the exact timeline for its rollout in the country remains unclear.
Sleep apnea is a condition that causes a person’s breathing to repeatedly stop and start during sleep, which can lead to serious health concerns. The Apple Watch’s sleep apnea detection tool uses its built-in accelerometer to track subtle wrist movements linked to irregular breathing. If these interruptions are detected consistently over several nights, they could point to signs of sleep apnea.
Apple Watch users can track their sleep-related data, including any breathing disturbances, directly through the Health app on their iPhone. The app categorizes these disturbances as either “elevated” or “not elevated,” providing users with insights into their nightly breathing patterns.
As Apple continues to enhance its health-monitoring capabilities, this new feature marks a significant step toward helping users identify potential sleep disorders early on.
