Wired publishes first iPhone X review.JPG

AppleInsider reports that Steven Levy, who was one of the first four people to review the original iPhone in 2007, has now been given the opportunity by Apple to write the first in-depth review of the iPhone X for Wired.

To sum up the review overall, Levy seems very impressed with various aspects of the phone, including Animojis, which he says “actually draw on some of the most technologically sophisticated advances of the iPhone X. The traits that make it unique: facial recognition, exotic sensors, an advanced camera, and powerful chips that drive graphics and machine learning. “

In fact, so groundbreaking did Levy consider the new iPhone’s augmented reality features that he said that it may well be remembered in years to come as “kicking off a new wave of apps that take us a step closer to making technology truly invisible.”

As far as the notorious “notch” at the top of the screen is concerned, Levy says that it is an “aesthetic setback,” adding that “you get used to it, like watching a play when someone with big hair is off-center in the row ahead of you. A tiny distraction in your peripheral vision that you eventually get past.”

Levy also said that Face ID took a while to get used to, but he was impressed with how well it worked with Apple Pay, and said that once he got the hang of it, he found that it was “a clearer way to do transactions.”

In terms of the overall quality of the iPhone X camera, Levy said that it was a “major upgrade” but left it to others to say if it could be said to be “claiming the mobile photo crown.”
