SIM Card Not Recognized - Unlock/Jailbreak?

Hi -

I'm not having any luck getting this ladies phone to work.

She purchased it off someone and it has been damaged. The phone doesn't have its original SIM in it and I am unable to get the phone to load up. I restored it but all i am able to do is make an emergency call and it has the cable to iphone and itunes logo behind it.

I need to get this phone usable so this lady can at least use it.

How do i get past this?

I believe i have 4.2.1 installed when i restored but I can't find out as i can't get into the OS.

Please help!

You either need to use an official SIM to activate the phone or hacktivate and unlock it so it can be used on an unsupported carrier.

Are there any instructions on here on what to do? I've been looking at ways online but am having trouble...

Any way to know what the original provider was?
