Phone as a hot spot

I have the unlimited ATT plan (no hotspot), I'm on the Internet a lot, do a lot of email, and stream radio and XM satellite...i usually use around 600-700MG per month.

With the current accounts you have, you should be able to see if the 4GB plan will be enough for you.

Thanks, I was not good in math. 700MG is how much? .7GB? Jim

Yes... You are correct... 700mb = .7gb

Coming from the PC world and still needing my PC's (laptop and desktop) for most of my real estate work, I send and receive upwards of 5-10gigs of data a month so I'll probably always be rooted to a DSL or Cable Modem but if the competition ever get's hot enough between Verizon, AT&T and any other major competitors, I'm hoping they end up offering unlimited free hotspot data for the iPhone.

IMO it would be the ultimate situation for me and a lof of other people but I undstand that a lot of data hogs that hoard and do huge file downloads such as music, porn, videos, YouTube, etc. will abuse an unlimited plan so the chance of future unlimited data via wireless plans might be a pipe dream.

It's interesting to see how data plans are evolving anyway. I had an air card with Alltel that was unlimited and now I wish I'd had the presence of mind to keep that plan going. I understand they're still honoring those old contracts and plans. Hindsight truly is 20/20... ;)

The way I understand it, if you are on a WiFi hot spot, IE Starbucks, Taco Bell, your office, you are not using any of your data allowance of your phone plan.

You are only using your data allowance if your phone is sending or receiving from a cell tower.

Cut from the plan details: iPhone has Wi-Fi built in! You can connect quickly and seamlessly to your home wireless network or to more than 20,000 AT&T Wi-Fi Hot Spots in the U.S at no additional charge.

I need to get this clarified, but I believe that is what I was told. I will be using the phone as a hot spot/router in my home to run my 2 laptops and printer. Thus, I will be connecting to the cell tower to run my 2 laptops. Was told I can connect 5 devices to the phone. I think. Going to call ATT today. I found a really nice young man at the store yesterday, who knows this stuff.

I have the unlimited data plan and with cydia and help from people on this form i was able to tether without paying more (PDANET).

but the only reason i have unlimited is because i got the plan grandfatherd in which i love. i just hope with the 4G coming out they wont make me change my plan to get it. :(
