Iphone as wifi hotspot?

I've had an iPhone 4 since last September & I'm thinking about getting an iPad 2. I've heard that if I get the wifi only iPad I can use my iPhone as a hotspot? How does this work? I only have wifi in my house & I will want to take the iPad out with me. Is there a way to connect it to 3G using my iPhone when I'm not on wifi?

It depends on your carrier for the cost, but they both will let you. Another option is to jailbreak your phone and buy a program called my wifi. It's a one time charge and then all you use is your phones data plan.
