The Wall Street Journal reports that Apple is already struggling to keep up with demand for the iPhone 5 in India, following on from its launch in that huge territory this past Friday. According to the report, most outlets in India where the iPhone 5 can be obtained are already out of stock.

“We were sold out within 24 hours of launch, it’s all gone,” Himanshu Chakrawarti, chief executive of The MobileStore Ltd., told The Wall Street Journal. And when he says “all gone”, he’s talking about 900 stores across India, not just a couple! The Wall Street Journal says that 10,000 to 15,000 iPhone 5s were shipped to India, according to sources familiar with the matter, with Apple receiving orders from specialised distribution companies and mobile phone carriers for 100,000 iPhone 5s for India alone. The report goes on to say that Apple’s partners in India are hoping to be getting more stock by the end of this week.

Its anyone’s guess why a phone that sells for $199 in the US should cost $833 in India.

Its anyone’s guess why a phone that sells for $199 in the US should cost $833 in India.

Actually the iPhone 5 16GB sells for $650 USD. The only way to buy it for $199 is to sign a two year contract.

Now asking why $650 vs $833 comes down to several factors.

1) Import taxes.
2) Regulations.
3) What the market is willing to pay.
