iPhone 4 to Launch in India This Friday

Cult of Mac reports that the iPhone 4 is set to go on sale in India this Friday, May 27, via carriers Aircel and Bharti airtel. This is big news for Apple, with India being the second largest telecoms market in the world after China, with 811.59 million subscribers according to The Economic Times.

Just how many iPhones Apple will manage to sell in India remains to be seen however, as it’s going to cost Indians a whopping Rs. 34,500 ($760) to buy the 16GB version, and Rs. 40,900 ($900) for the 32GB version if they get it from Aircel (Bharti airtel has yet to reveal its pricing for the phone). As Cult of Mac points out, expecting customers to pay so much upfront is the reverse of how the iPhone is sold in the US and Europe, with most carriers allowing their customers to absorb the bulk of the cost in their monthly contract, so that they don’t have so much to pay upfront. According to Cult of Mac, in India, once the customer has paid the full amount for the handset upfront, Aircel will then reimburse 100 percent of the customer’s initial outlay over the course of the next 24 months by giving them airtime credits.

so they will be locked to them networks and not factory unlocked? not bad a those prices

No no no, i should say that most of it over there will be factory unlock just like in China mainland. Only 1% of the iPhones here are factory locked to a mobile network "china unicom" all the rest are factory unlock mostely from hong kong and i'm prety sure that the same thing going to happen in India, but let's wait and see.
