In a Contact, Send Message to an e-mail address opens New MMS which fails

I just got my iPhone 4S, and it's awesome, of course.

One observation - if I am in a Contact, and I select 'Send message' and then select one of the Contact's e-mail addresses, I'm taken to a 'New MMS' windo. If I create a message and send it here, it fails (at least over WiFi).

All comments and advice much appreciated.
