How to upgrade software on my jailbroken, unlocked 3G?

My phone is already jailbroken and already unlocked but has slowed down massively, I want to upgrade the software to speed it up.
Please would someone be able to point me in the right direction as there seems to be so much conflicting information out there?

Iphone 3G
Version 3.1.3(7E18)
Modem firmware 05.12.01

The issue isnt the software, its how much you have installed on your phone. You should go threw it and delete all programs that you dont use and this will help out alot. The new software is great but you will have the same issue if you dont clean up some of your programs.

I agree. 3.1.3 is the optimum 3G firmware from my perspective. The most you should do is backup using iTunes, restore 3.1.3 again, and restore your backup + re-jailbreak. Then take care with what Cydia apps you install to keep it fast...
