Better phone reception

Get dropped calls and lapses in conversation with iphone 4 while my wife gets perfect calls with her cheap pantech with ATT. can I expect better with new iphone 5s?

I have Verizon and my reception is Great on my 5s, not sure about the 4 and/or not sure if it's a carrier thing
