I'm not much of a tech-y guy, and I'm getting an iPhone for my birthday. I've noticed that iPhone 4 costs triple of the previous version. I look at the difference list but it's mostly jibrish to me.

Can anyone explain the differences between the two, and if it's worth it to get the latter?

It's at the hardware parts that the real differences are. The iPhone 4 is more powerful than the 3gs in that domain, but both of them run the same iOS.

front facing camera is useful for Skype and Facetime (video calling) chats

Can you write a list ofthe things you don't understand...?

Here's my little list: how does bab2010 have time to reply to so many messages!! :-))

Note: I'm glad he does!

The download speed and the display quality are the big differences for me. You really don't realize how slow the iPhone 3 is until you see the same app ran on the iPnone 4.

These are my reasons for upgrading to the Four.

expect the 3gs to be soon forgotten about especially with the coming release of a new iphone... the iphone 4 is much better in every way. nice newer better design better camera, front facing one.. faster processor..

but if you have not bought either yet i would wait and get the new device in the fall

I too like the Retina display over the prior LCD's used in the other models. I've had my iPhone 4 next to a friend's 3gs, and my 2nd gen iPod touch, and the difference is incredible.

I must admit the iPhone 4's screen directly compared to the 3GS's puts it to shame...

Assuming you mean the new iPhone 4 and the still current iPhone 3GS, there are a substantial number of differences between these models in design, display, capability, performance, battery life and more.

For most users, the iPhone 4 is "worth it," but an independent comparison can be useful for you to decide whether the lower upfront price of the iPhone 3GS is more important than the other differences.

Also, keep in mind that most of the cost is not upfront, but is tied to the plan. This can be worthwhile to provide a better idea of the total cost of ownership.
