Weather

Everyone here is holding their breath and crossing their fingers waiting for “Lowell” to make its turn and head north towards Niihau and Kauai. It is currently a Category 4 hurricane; it got up to Category 5 a couple of times during its journey across the Pacific.

Everyone’s extra nervous because Lowell’s track resembles Hurricane Iniki’s track, which made landfall on Kauai on September 11, 1992. (Second pic is Iniki’s track.)

Hope everyone stays safe and out of harm's Way

Hurricane Lowell went by the eastern edge of the state last night and early this morning as a Category 2. Damaging tropical storm-force to near hurricane-force winds battered Kauai County as the center of Lowell passed roughly 90 miles to the west.

Flooding was mainly caused by storm surge; rainfall was less than expected; no injuries have been reported so far. Power outages are widespread (90%); damage assessments are just beginning.

No word yet from Niihau, which lies west of Kauai; Lowell came within 30 miles. Although it is part of Kauai County, it is privately owned, and access is limited.

Here on the Big Island (350 miles east), storm effects were minimal, mainly high surf on the western and southern coasts.

Karina dissipated; Marie went north to wreak havoc on the West Coast.

(Pics–yesterday afternoon and this morning.)
