Tropical storm “Moke” (moh-kay) is passing well south of the “Big Island.” It just started to drizzle, but I think we’ll be OK. The power is still on; about 10 thousand customers still haven’t had their power restored from last weekend! …

Normal weather forecast for the next week. There’s another system that may become a threat in about 10 days. Right now, it’s a “wait and see” situation.

Hurricane season is from June to November in Hawaii. Because of “El Niño,” this year was forecast to be active. We got off to a slow start, but it sure has picked up! …

We will be dodging hurricanes again over the next ten days or so. “Lowell” is currently a tropical storm and expected to become a category 3 hurricane before weakening and passing south of the islands Wednesday. “Karina” is already a hurricane and is also expected to strengthen to category 3. It is forecast to go by north of the state about a week later. Both storms are expected to remain far enough away to prevent catastrophic damage. I hope the forecasts are correct.

Meanwhile, there’s still another disturbance (X) that has a better than even chance of organizing into a storm!

Hurricane Lowell reached category 5 intensity and is now passing south of the Big Island as a category 4. It is expected to take a very sharp right turn, putting the islands of Niihau and Kauai in the “danger zone” on Tuesday.

Hurricanes Karina and Marie remain in the “big picture ,“ but are not expected to present any severe weather impacts to the state.
