Volume won't shut off

I recorded a short video on my iPhone recently. I turned my ringer to mute, and pressed the volume control on the side down as far as it could go. I then pressed play on the video, and it starting blaring away as if the volume wasn't touched.

Am I doing something wrong?

There is a slider below the pause/play button that shows you the media volume setting. You need to slid it far left the first time to get it to go silent. The volume buttons only work in context. If you were on the main screen, you were turning down the ringer volume level at that time.
