Hi,
I go on long walks, and my wife worries about me, especially when I venture into the woods, which is my favourite thing.
Is there a way that she can track the iphone 6, which does not have a phone service, in case
something happens to me, like being mauled by a bear or eaten by a wolf;).
Any help is appreciated.

Yes, you can still track a phone without a plan or even a SIM card in it. However, Find My does rely on a WiFi signal. The authorities may in an emergency be able to track the device.

Hi Caroline,
I hope you're well. The touch screen is still working👍.
So, I would have to register it on my iCloud accont (which I haven't done), and activate 'Find my phone'?
Is there any way of checking whether she can find it, after I do that?
Thanks,
...... john

Hi John, Thank you. Yes, you would need to enter your iCloud ID on the phone. Find my iPhone should turn automatically, but it’s worth checking. You would also need to Share your Location (setting under Find My) with your wife. Your wife would need to sign into iCloud or view your location on an iPhone if she has one too to see where you were. But, don’t forget you would need a WiFi signal. Caroline

OK. That seems fairly straight forward. She has an iPad so that should work. My 'Location' as in login information. I can do that. She has her own account for the iPad. So, once she gets access how would she find where I am? Is there some sort of tracking map or??
Oh dear, now that's a problem .... a WiFi signal in the woods!

The stumbling block is the WiFi signal. Otherwise she would go to People under Find My and select Directions to see where you are on the map.

Hi again,
I'm a little confused. Would the phone signal, assuming I had a plan, find me, when the WiFi would not?
Do you know of any other solution, without a phone plan?
Thanks,
.... john

It would depend on how near you were to a mobile mast and how far the signal travelled - it might work. if not, assuming the phone would be searching for signal, it would be detectable - but probably only be detectable by specialised equipment. In the newest iPhones there is satellite detection, but not on the iPhone 6.

That sounds like you are trying to spy on someone, nice little story to post for ways to do it.

Hi Teddy,
I guess I didn't explain myself properly. My wife wants to track my whereabouts when I'm in the woods; in case
I don't come home, havnig broken a leg or who knows what. I'm not as young as I used to be, and she worries when I go where no one
would come across me for days.

P.S. I guess no one is ever as young as they used to be;).
