With many recent rumours about the forthcoming iPhone 8’s front-facing 3D facial recognition features, not much has been heard about the rear-facing camera for the new phone, but today, 9to5 Mac reports that according to Fast Company, the forthcoming iPhone 8 is set to have a rear-facing 3D laser sensor for the purposes of augmented reality (AR).
According to Fast Company’s sources, the 3D laser system sensor will ensure that the iPhone 8 has the sort of high-quality depth-detection required by AR. This would also enable Apple to make ARKit applications more precise, and make the overall technology behind it more powerful.
Aside from the AR benefits, the new system is also said to provide “a more accurate type of autofocus for photography.”
The specific system that Apple is said to be using in the iPhone 8 is the VSCEL laser system, which “consists of a source (the VCSEL laser), a lens, detector (sensor), and a processor.”
Fast Company says that the unit costs approximately $2 per phone.
Another new features mentioned in the report include “possibly—sealed buttons on the side of the phone that respond with haptic feedback and are completely waterproof.”
