if you can get your hands on a 4.2b3 ipsw you can be untethered

This will only work if you have saved the SHSH files won't it?

From what I understand this is the reason I can't have untethered on my iphone which has 4.2.1 on it. My iphone4 came with 4.2.1 installed on it from the store, so downgrading to 4.2b isn't possible (from what I understand).

Yes you need SHSH's for 4.2b3 to be able to install it on your phone. It's the same for any firmware apart from the latest.

When 4.3 comes out you will need SHSH's for 4.2.1 if you wish to go back to it...
