iphone turns turn on but nothing on screen

my friends iPhone 3g turns on and just shows the apple logo but nothing else shows up whats the problem

Hold both home and sleep buttons in together until it shuts down and the apple appears.Then release both buttons and let it start.

tried that just keeps doing the same thing wont go past the logo

If it's factory unlocked,restore it.
