[TD="class: alt1, bgcolor: #FAFAFA"]Ok my sisters PC took a dump (imagine that) the other day so I had to restore the thing back to stock so she had to reload iTunes. But now if she plugs in her iPhone 4 it doesn't know it. If she syncs it with the computer, since its just like a new computer now, will she loose anything like pictures, music, contacts, anything?

Yes, it would be, but she avoid to lose them by shutting off the automatic management of itunes.

You can download 3rd party programs to rip the music/contacts and such off of the iphone and set it to itunes so when it does sync automatically if she adds new music and all on she wont lose it.

What does "manually manage music and videos" do?

It simply allows you to drag media (apps, tones, music, etc) one at a time, multiple, or all to your device without syncing one entire section at one time, like syncing apps and music.

Hmm, I need a visual here. But, I'm probably not understanding the concept because I don't have a huge music file and I have everything synced. I can uncheck a specific app and not sync it, and I can uncheck apps altogether and not sync them when I sync the phone. Isn't that the same thing? And how does this relate to the issue the OP was asking about as far as setting up a new computer to get info off the phone? While I'm computer savvy in some areas, I am very much a computer idiot in others. I still find iTunes so confusing to use! LOL!

I'm paying particular interest to this thread because my computer is getting on in age and I'm probably going to get a new one this year. I am dreading the time I have to get my phone and iTunes hooked up!

iTunes is never ever an issue as long as you disable automatic syncing in preferences. ;)

I have done that. Learned that early on and I tell everyone I know that buys an iphone to do it first thing. Why it's not the default is beyond me!

Because Apple is eviiilll,.....and insist you use iTunes for everything .....automatically.lol.

How about syncing an idevice for the first time time. Under the APPS tab there are not any application listed. It there are pictures of the applications installed on he right hand side of the screen. I remember before the names of the applications that are installed on the I devices were listed also on the left hand side as well.

I don't have my device hooked up, but if memory serves me, you won't see the "native" apps listed on the left (ie Safari, newsstand, maps, etc). They cannot be removed, and therefore not "synced". They would be on the pages over to the right though so you can see them and move them around. So, until you put in your own apps, I don't believe you will see any listed under the sync tab.

How do I put in my own apps?

You download them from iTunes store.

Please believe me...not to sound insulting to you in any way, but if you don't understand the basic functions such as downloading apps, which is a "highlight" of the iphone, you might want to consider getting some instruction from an Apple tutorial online or an Apple store employee. If you are having trouble learning that basic concept, you will probably encounter issues/perks with your phone that you will never understand. You will never realize the true fun you can have with your phone! :)

One way to learn about your phone is You Tube. Search under iPhone and I bet you will find all sorts of tutorials!
