I foolishly tried to jailbreak my iphone 4 earlier but ended up bricking it and had to restore it. But I got a few errors whilst trying to restore through Itunes so I had to edit my "hosts" file on my PC. I finally managed to restore my iphone back to normal however it will not let me connect to my home WIFI network and will not let me sign in with any Apple ID. Anything that is apple basically will not connect.

Could this be something to do with editing the hosts file on my PC as it appears the iphone doesnt connect to apples servers now?
I realise this is my fault for trying to jailbreak - trust me WON'T be trying it again!!

Jailbreaking shouldn't have caused this since bricking is tied mostly to your baseband. Open up your Settings.app, and go to General > About and see if you have anything in your IMEI, MAC and Bluetooth fields. If it's not a bunch of 0's, then your device wasn't bricked, and maybe another fresh restore would do the trick. If it is all 0's, then you have a bricked device. As for Apple and Wifi not working, a bricked iPhone can be the cause of it, but let's see if it really is bricked first before we jump the gun.

Hi Willerz, thanks for your response. Maybe bricked was the wrong word as all of the things you advised me to check appear ok. Any chance you have any ideas of how I could fix this? It seems that my phone is unable to connect to anything internet or apple based. However I have full signal from Vodafone and the phone indicates I have good 3g signal. Many thanks

Can you go on the internet using 3G? It might be that your APN settings had a reset. If your IMEI, Bluetooth and MAC fields in Settings > General > About is filled in with actual fields rather than just 0000000000000 or an empty field, then I would recommend doing a fresh restore. If those fields are either blank or full of 0's only, then you have a bricked iPhone.

Hi Jon,
No I cannot access using 3G - when trying to access the apple website Safari says "Could not activate mobile data network" even though it is activated

I have done a fresh restore several times and it is still the same. None of the fields are blank or zeros.

I'm very confused, hopefully I can fix this as I only got it today! Never trying to jailbreak it myself again, thats for sure :(

Have reset all APN data and the issue still exists

All websites, basically anything internet/3g/wifi based on the phone wont work. Just tried ringing my other phone and calls work fine its just internet. Its strange how it wont allow me to even connect to my home wifi network to access things

Does this iPhone in particular happen to be unlocked in any way? Either an IMEI unlock, SAM unlock or a factory unlock?

It was not unlocked when I got it. I attempted to unlock it using SAM after I jailbroke it. This did not work so I restored the iphone which is when the problems began to occur.

I have arranged a meeting at the apple store for 4 days time, not sure whether to be honest and explain what happened or to play dumb so to speak

Ahh. Now I know why. SAM unlock only works with saved SAM tickets. If you force the unlock, you can experience a "soft" brick. It's not that the iPhone is bricked, but probably a port. But to confirm this, I need you to tell me if your IMEI exists on your iPhone or is it just 0000 000000000 000

Yay Jon it sounds like you may know how to
Fix it! I can confirm there is a proper imei number.
