Hi, so I have a friend coming from the US end of next month and I'm going to have her bring an iPhone for me.

I have heard about people getting on-contract iPhone (with T-Mobile/ Verizon/ at&t etc), and then "Unlocking" it to use it in a foreign country (in this case India).

I am a total newby here, and request you guys to help me with two queries:

- is it possible to "unlock" an iPhone 6 bought in the US on Contract and then use it here in India?

- if yes, which sercice provider contract will be easier to break? I wish to use the phone on GSM network in India.

- what will I lose if I do this Unlocking thing?

- how can I do this?

Look forward to your help guys..

If you did that, you would still be legally required to make the contracted payments every month for the life of the contract. Buying a subsidized, contracted iPhone with no intent to fulfil the contract would be considered fraud.

The only advice we can give you is to buy an unlocked, unsubsidized, iPhone or be prepared to buy out the contract, after which most cellular providers will unlock the iPhone.

With that, this thread is now closed.
