Apple’s iPhone 4 and iPad were both presented with awards last night by The Society for Information Display (SID) for their achievements in display technology, as reported on by Jim Dalrymple of The Loop. The iPhone 4 won the Display of the Year Gold Award for the Retina Display, and the iPad won the Display Application of the Year Gold Award. Talking about the iPhone 4’s Retina Display, SID says that Apple earned the award because of the way in which it had managed to squeeze four times the number of pixels into the same 3.5-inch screen as the earlier iPhone models. SID was also impressed with the Retina Display’s “low power consumption and image quality,” and its viewing angle which it says is “superior to conventional mobile LCDs,” due to the iPhone 4’s Mobile IPS (in-plane switching) technology. SID lists the Retina Display’s technical advancements as including the following (deep breath!):

“customised LTPS TFT backplane with organic passivation and optimized pixel design; user customisable, auto-adjustable brightness using ambient light sensing; advanced IPS compensation polariser technology for high contrast (800: 1) and colour consistency regardless of viewing direction; 8-bit colour depth; an ultra-thin, tiny-footprint driver IC; and patent-pending mechanical integration.”
