Infinite reboot

I was hoping to get more help here than the internet was offering me. I jailbroke a buddy's iphone 3g. He's not the brightest person so he got it stuck in the infinite boot death trap. Ive never had to deal with it myself so idk what i should do. I dont think he or i installed open ssh on it before it got stuck and i dont think he had his wifi on so that cancels out sshing into it. I already know i can restore it but thats the last resort being since he has things he needs off of it. I read i a few places that tiny umbrella might help so ill try that but any other advice would be appreciated

does he not have the phone backed up on itunes? why dont you try put it in dfu mode then take it out? what happens when you try sync with itunes?

I can restore with itunes only if i put it in dfu mode but like i said, i dont really want to do a restore.

What caused it to get stuck in the loop?

Im not sure but im guessing it was something from winterboard. He had a lot of theme-ing going on when i last saw it.
