Want to buy an Apple computer. I already have a Sony Vaio laptop. So which should I get, iMac or Mac Book Pro? And why? Seriously, I can't decide. I need a little help from those who has either or both products. Thanks for your help.

Well if you travel a lot or need to move around then get the mbp but if you will be at home or dont really move around then get the imac and also you will get better specs for less money with the imac as well.

Go for the 17inch MBP, the screen is big enough for everything you will want to do, Photography, musics, videos, coding etc... Here the only difference existing in iMac and MBP in my opinion is the size of the display and the prices. Regarding the performance of the MBP you can boost it by adding more RAM and 1T of HDD if you wish.
Opting for a MBP will allow you to be movable with your computer whenever wherever however you want. At the beginning you might think that it's too big, but once you get use to it you will never notice that is too big. Put it on a stable place in your room or office if you want to use as a desktop and your 17inch MBP will be just fine.
But opting for a MBP require you to have an eye on the battery and have it exercising some time if you wish to use it like a desktop.
I'm have this product which i use like a desktop and i never regretted buying it instead of the iMac, in fact even though most of the time i never move it around, times come when i need to carry my MBP somewhere to work with.
I read you are having a sony laptop so i could have suggested to you to go for the iMac, but since you are already having a Laptop, it means that you move around with it sometimes or most of the time, Just like the iPhone, i believe that after you will taste the OS X Lion for a month or so, you will not like to have anything to do with your Sony anymore, your MBP will then be able to follow you everywhere you wish compare to an iMac.
Hoo and be award of the 17inch MPB and iMac GUI font which in most of the native apps are very small to read. It's a pain for me to read the safari browser header, ical, iTunes, app store, etc... all are having very tiny fonts, and the more you try to make them bigger by changing the display resolution, the more blurry the screen becomes, everything else is perfect.

sure its big enough for everything but its a brick I would hate to carry that thing around with me

Thanks guys for your input. One says iMac and the other Mac Book Pro, and the reasons are sound.
Anyone else?

One huge question? How compatible is the Apple software with enterprise software, or pc software? Meaning documents created on Apple computers, can they be easily viewable on pc's and vice versa?

I am not saying either.. I am asking if you travel a lot? if you move around a lot? if Yes then it might be worth getting the macbook pro, I would not get more then a 15 inch though as the 17 inch is just huge.

If you just stay at home and surf the web or what ever you do then I would go for the imac..

i have the 13" macbook pro and i love it,its a great size if you want portability, its fast and does everything i want, space is an issue for me as well.

Honestly I like having portability. The only reason I don't take my Sony Vaio around because the battery on last 2hrs of that. The only reason I was considering the iMac was, like you stated same money for bigger better screen, and better specs. But on the other hand, space is important. But I still can't decide. I do know however that I want be getting the 17" Mac Book Pro.

How's the screen? Is viewing the content an issue?

If I get the Mac Book Pro, these are the two options I will have to choose from.

Then you have answered your own question :)

the 13 is amazing for portability and I have one also but you cant really multi task properly or have many apps open at the same time with out it really getting in the way but its light and very good for traveling and its not a brick..

battery on the new mbps are supposed to be about 7 hours so you would probably get around 5-6 out of them depending on what you do.. but gaming really drains the battery so it will last a few hours with heavy gaming..

imac the 27 inch all the way! :) bigger = better.

I would wait a little longer though as I think some new macs will be coming this year, maybe a re design

i have never found it an issue and before this i had a 17" windows machine so you would think that i would find this small,so no its great,go to an Apple store and have a little play, they will be only too happy to help you make your decision...............having said all that if space wasn't an issue then the 27" iMac would be my choice,it just beautiful.

It really depends on what you plan to do.

If you do a lot of traveling I would pick up the MBP as they get better battery life than most laptops. They MacBook Air might also be a consideration with its extremely thin profile, and light weight. Plus the 13" air has about a 7 hour battery life.

For home I say pick up a iMac as MacBooks are quite pricey and its hard to justify buying a second laptop when you have a working one already.

Personally I like the MacBook Pros but you will get more power out of a desktop iMac. It really depends on what you plan on using your computer for. I did own a 11" MBAir back in September and I loved it but I needed something that could run Autocad which the basic Air could not and at $1000 I couldn't justify spending more on a laptop that didn't have more of what I wanted. I ended up returning the Air and buying a refurbished Dell XPS 15 for $950 with more of the specs I wanted, like a blu-ray drive and full 1080p screen, plus a Quad core processor. But my purchase is justified in the fact that I do play some demanding games on my laptop.

For school I would prefer a MBAir as it's only about 2lbs but I don't have the money to spend on a second laptop?

Just my 2¢.

Edit: something I forgot to ask, how old is your current Vaio?
