The current version of the Facebook app requires iOS 5 or greater. Unless you have an older version of the Facebook app in iTunes on your computer, you can't install it on an iPhone 3G as the highest iOS for the iPhone 3G is iOS 4.2.1.

Unless you downloaded the old version of the app yourself when it was the current version of the app and stored it in your iTunes on your computer, you can't get it. Since you don't have an iTunes account it means that there's no way to get the app for the iPhone 3G. Your kid will have to use the website version of Facebook.

I'm afraid not. It can no longer be downloaded. The iOS 4.2.1 version of the app was last available in early 2011. Apps can't be transferred between friends, it would violate the Apple terms of service.

You either attach a credit card to your iTunes account or you buy prepaid iTunes cards and redeem them on your account for a balance, then you can purchase them for a one time fee assuming the app does not have a monthly service attached to it like Netflix and Hulu

Generally, unless the app itself mandates that you have to pay a monthly fee, it's a one time price. For most apps that're free, they have in-app purchases that are optional such as Facebook Cash for games and such.

Unless you already have the iPhone 3G version of the app in iTunes on your computer, there's no legal way for you to obtain it. In this case you have no choice but to use the website version of Facebook.
