I tried several methods of downgrading so I could jailbreak (I was on 4.2.9). I thought I had one working because it said it was jailbreaking on my iphone screen but when it got done, all I have is the usb cable and the arrow going into itunes and I can't get it to reboot or anything...what can I do?

unplug it. try to turn it off and on again. try pluging it in the wall...then the pc try all possible combinations until u can get it to fire up..

Perform a factory restore then try this method.

How do I do a factory restore?

1) Sync to iTunes.
2) backup your iPhone if at all possible
3) in iTunes go to the summary tab
4) click on restore
5) you'll see a few notifications pop up.
6) after all this your screen should show the USB cable and iTunes icon.
7) download the latest firmware.
8) now you can begin your downgrade procedure with the link I provided!
