Several years ago, we spent an exorbitant amount of time trying to figure out how to get rid of old, out-of-date and misspelled email addresses from the recent contacts list in Mail.
As far as I'm aware, we never figured out a way of doing it, and simply learned to live with the issue.
Whether it wasn't possible on earlier versions of iOS I have no idea, but it is certainly possible now.
