I do not have an Iphone but want to know if you have tried this on your Iphone4 Verizon or At&T or Not.

This is how I jailbroke my Ipad: BTW im running 4.2.1

1. 1st A tethered jailbreak using (Redsn0w)
2. Without restoring I downloaded (Greenposi0n)
3. Jailbroke it that way, and it was untethered WA-LA.

If I understand your question properly, that is how I JB my phone. I was first running the tethered redsnow, then when greenpoison came out ran it over the top which works fine.

I'm not sure what point 3. is though.

Oops... by the way... that was on 4.2.1 but I'm not on Verizon or AT&T, sorry I over looked that.

You could have untethered jailbreak your device directly with greenpoison without 1st having to tethered jailbreaking it using redsnow. You just waisted time IMO
