Foxconn vice president reveals 40 percent defect rate for iPhone 8 OLED display.JPG

AppleInsider reports that Foxconn vice president Luo Zhongsheng has revealed in a now-deleted post on Chinese micro-blogging website Weibo that the iPhone 8 will be more expensive to buy as a direct result of low yields of the OLED display. Apparently, difficulties with cutting the OLED material is leading to a 40% defect rate for the displays.

While Zhongsheng did not give much information away about the nature of the cutting difficulties, simply referring to a “special cutting” issue, experts have speculated that the cutout, or “notch,” at the top of the iPhone 8 where the phone’s sensors are housed could be the problematic area.

Recent reports have suggested that the iPhone 8 could cost more than $1,000, with some rumours speculating it could even cost as much as $1,200.

Recently leaked HomePod firmware has revealed that Apple has ditched plans to embed the Touch ID sensor in the iPhone 8’s OLED display in favour of 3D facial recognition technology.
