Alright, I've done some searching and it's only really brought up more questions. I'm new to the concept of jailbreaking but have had an iPhone for a couple of years.

First, I just had to get a whole new hard drive since my 1st and 2nd one died (now on my 3rd). Needless to say, neither of those 2 hard drives were backed up nor was my iPhone backed up anywhere but on them. I don't have my contacts anywhere else (mail, another phone, etc) and I really don't want to loose them. Is there a way I can pull this off my phone for free? Or, if I jailbreak my phone and it goes sour will the backup of my phone have everything on it still? If not, I've seen some that are for pay (program that pulls info off phone, I know all legit jbers are free) and which is the best?

Along with that, is there a jailbreak program that doesn't make you start from scratch? One that keeps all the current settings but just writes over it? And which would be the best, most stable one? [EDIT: Should I jb my phone if I'm about to leave the country for 5 weeks? Or wait until I have more time to see how it goes?]

And lastly (for now :)), I just want to make 100% sure that my iPhone 4 V4.2.1 with a baseband of 03.10.01 (found by f0rcast) isn't able to be unlocked (as of now). I am traveling abroad shortly and would prefer to keep my iPhone rather then using my unlocked BBPearl 8100.

Thanks so much!

Connect your device to your comouter and open up iTunes, your iPhone icon will show up in the left panel of iTunes, make a left click on your iPhone icon and in the drop list select "backup" this process will backup all your infomartion including your games, SMS, files, settings etc... Do not use any paid app to backup your iPhone files, iTunes does it all and best. You can use any of the available jailbreaking tools like redsnow or pwnage tool (for Mac) or snowbreeze to jailbreak your phone. If something goes wrong, just restore the iOS using iTunes and then restore your created backup using iTunes as well.

redsnow is what you are talking about. If perform the jailbreaking of the iOS without messing your anything in the device but only adding one more icon called cydia.

if you are new in jailbreaking like you've mentioned up there, it's in your interest to read and know better about jailbreak before you go down the road of jailbreaking your phone. Nevertheless the jailbreaking process itself and with redsnow for example takes about 10mn or less, depend on how fast is your computer and how less mess up you doing. And that's why you should really read and know what you are doing before and when jailbreaking. You can do it before travel or after you have time it doesn't matter, the important is that you know what you are doing when jailbreaking your iPhone.

Like you said, your baseband is not unlockable and you might need to use other ways to unlock your baseband otherwise you will not be able to use the phone on another carrier. In case you are going to jailbreak, do remember to backup your files using iTunes, and get tinyUmbrella on Internet and use it to save your iOS version shsh, otherwise, if something goes wrong whole jailbreaking and require a factory restore, iTunes will upgrade your iOS to the latest version which is 4.3.3 and happen to not be stable for some users, to be able to get back to your actuall iOS version, that save shsh I will be of use. Good luck.
