Hi, I have a 3g which is jailbroken with redsn0w o/s 4.2.1 base band 06.15.00. Everything works ok apart from the wifi. It is not greyed out it just can't see any networks. I tend to think it may be a hardware problem but I would like to hear from someone who knows of a fix for this or has any helpful ideas.

i know very little about JB'd phones but you could try Settings-General-Reset Network Settings.....can't hurt,failing that a hard reset can sometimes help.
Try a hard reset. I get the same thing sometimes on my iPad where it's sitting right in front of the router and still can't find it. A few Airplane mode toggles and a hard reset while the Wifi toggle is on generally fixes it. And of course try what Ivy said first as it can solve most errors without the headache
