Can't do backup to computer or I-Cloud

Dear All
My 3 year old 64Gb 4S is almost full and I can't back it up to my computer because I don't have enough HDD space to allow me to put the backup on my new 6
Neither can I back up to I-Cloud
It will get to Step 1 or 2 of 4 then the 4S disconnects itself

Backing up to iCloud works different than to iTunes. You don't backup to a device, but to online storage. You're able to decide what needs to be backed up in the settings of your iPhone. When you enable automatic iCloud backups, this will happen as soon as your device is connected to WiFi, locked and charging.

Can you please explain why you can't backup to iCloud?

Do you have one or more older iCloud backups for your iPhone stored in iCloud? Deleting the older backups can sometimes help in cases like this. Even though this support page talks about the 5S , it's applicable to your 4s.
