You can use the snowbreeze method via Ih8snow's website as suggested, you will need the IPSW that corrisponds to either the software thats on the device (to search go to settings>general>about and scroll down to see the X.X.X software) or a 5.1.1 IPSW.. Create a custom IPSW with base band presurvation mode on in snowbreeze.

It's likely you will need a recent copy installed of Itunes of course. Head to apple for that.
There are MANY tutorials avail online that will literally take you by the hand and guide you thru the process.
In short form:
Plug in Iphone
Open Redsnow
Extras>SHSHblobs>FEtch blobs
Wait
Extras>SHSHBLOBS>Verify
Wait
Extras>SHSHblobs>Submit
Wait
Extras>SHSHblobs>Query
Wait, back out 1 screen when done
Select IPSW
select 5.1.1
Custom IPSW create, select 5.1.1. click Yes
wait, while waiting
Open TinyUmbrella
Click start TSS Server
Exit TU
back to rednsow, when done creating
Enter Pwned DFU mode (click button)
When done
close Redsnow, open iTunes (click cancel)
Shift+restore, select custom IPSW BB presurvation (created in Redsnow)
Go make a sandwitch
When done, turn off device (slide off)
Open redsnow
Click extras, select IPSW (select normal stock IPSW)
Clikc ok
Navigate back to front screen redsnow, click Jailbreak
DFU mode, click on Add CYDIA, and ADD BB 05.16.00
go
When done, slide phone off
back into redsnow
Select IPSW, back one screen click Jailbreak
Go thru DFU MODE
This time click downgrade BY ITSELF
Go.
YAY.. now when you get to Cydia, and after the pkgs update, search for Ultrasn0w
install.. and reboot your device.
Slaam in a sim and your good to go.
