We’ve all been calling it the OLED iPhone display for months, but today at the special event in Cupertino, California, Apple revealed that the iPhone X’s OLED display is actually called the “Super Retina” display.

Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Marketing, Phil Schiller, said during the keynote address that the 5.8-inch display is the first OLED panel that reaches the standards expected by iPhone, complete with stunning colours, true blacks, a million-to-one contrast ratio and wide colour support. The HDR display supports Dolby Vision and HDR10, and the addition of True Tone dynamically adjusts the white balance of the display to match the surrounding light for a more natural and paper-like view.

The all-screen display follows the curve of the phone all the way to the rounded corners. The front and back are encased in the most durable glass ever used in a smartphone, and the highly polished, surgical-grade stainless steel band binds and reinforces the casing. The seven-layer colour process ensures precise colour hues and opacity on the glass case, and a reflective optical layer makes the rich colours even richer. The casing is splash, water and dust resistant, with a rating of IP67 under IEC standard 60529.

Without a Home button, new gestures are introduced to enable you to navigate your way around the iPhone X, including swiping up to get to the Home screen from anywhere, used in combination with the new Face ID system to unlock the iPhone X.
