3gs stuck on apple screen

Okay I'm completely new to iphones and bought a 3gs for christmas. It has been previously owned and it has been jailbroken and I didn't like it so I was told to set the phone back to factory settings. Now it is just stuck on the black screen with the apple sign and will not turn on or off. It has been stuck like this for about 3 hours and I have no clue about iPhones and am definitely not a technical person so any step by steps or simple language would be appreciated!! thanks guys!

Hi there Katie! did the guy tell you if it had been unlocked as well as jailbroken?

also try hard reset it to kick it out of that black screen (hold the power button and the home button in together for about 10 seconds)
