Went up to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park this afternoon to catch episode 38 of the current eruption at Halemaumau Crater, which began last December. It was cool but comfortable; many visitors wore shorts.

From USGS website: The associated plume, composed of water vapor and SO2 gas (possibly with Pele's hair and fine ash), currently has a maximum height of ~15000 feet (4500 m) above ground level.

The plume is dispersed depending on atmospheric conditions. The immediate concern is laze (lava haze), more commonly referred to as vog here (volcanic fog). It’s nasty and can cause respiratory problems. (More pics on the Photos taken with the iPhone 16 thread.) …

Last Friday rain all day, nothing serious; Saturday excellent for viewing eruption; yesterday drippy all day; today somebody is doing a happy dance overhead! …

I’ve shivered and felt frozen in the rain, but I’ve never experienced freezing rain. Is that ice falling vs snowflakes? …
No. It falls as rain and freezes on impact. I have been driving trucks for over 40 years and I will not drive in it. If I can't find a turnout in very short order, I stop on the road surface.

That makes sense, otherwise it’d be hail?

Glad you’re safety conscious - one of the first things you see on bad weather reports (the lead stories recently) are jack-knifed trucks. Stay safe…

Winter started for me in September. I get plenty of practice. If I’ve learned one thing, it’s when not to do the job. There’s always tomorrow.
