My experience is somewhat different from the other post I read on this site.
My wife and I each have an iPhone 4. We both recently installed iOS5. My phone seems to be working fine. However, my wife's phone has very low speaker volume when receiving voice. The speaker volume control is turned all the way up. The speaker phone option works fine; excellent volume. She removed the iPhone from the protective case making certain that the speaker was not blocked or otherwise impaired.
Appears to be a software issue.
On my iPhone I have observed a strange quirk whereby after cycling the iPhone power off & on, the volume automatically resets to zero. I have missed several calls and text messages because I did not hear the call come in.
