update broke iphone (restore mode)

Hello

I have a friend tha tried to update to ios6 and now the phone say that he need to make a restor from itunes,
is shows the usb cable to itunes logo.

is there any way to make a backup of the stuff on the phone before restore ??

he has about 1 year of work on the phone, and the icloud wass filled after 1 month so there is no backup there
(stupid man dident want to pay for more space).

I don't have an iPhone, I have an iPad but since they are both IOS I assume they are the same. Back ups, automatic or manual can be done in the general settings. But He can't do a back up now until he restores the iPhone.

More then likely the backup is in either iTunes or in the cloud. He probably backs up and doesn't even know about it.
