Transfer SMS to a Mac

I've looked around on the web and I cant seem to find a solution to backing up and viewing my text messages. I can't believe this is that difficult and I think I'm missing the obvious. I've seen some options with third party software that can be purchased. I'm weary of going that route. Does anyone have any suggestions?

You can use iTunes to backup your iPhone and then use an SQLiteManager program to view the messages.
