The next generation iPhone is about to make its debut into this world later this year, and so far there have been a lot of rumors about what extraordinary features it will bring to the market. The latest theory, based on the uncovering of a patent published by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Offices this week, indicates that Apple is interested in developing a technology that could enable users of iPhones and other devices that could choose preferred methods of communication based on an analysis of signal strength and network status.

This system might help you choose which method of communication would be most useful and secure. Your cousin is stuck in a cabin in Montana? He might not have a strong signal there, therefore it would be advised to text message him not to call him. The system will be able to make these deductions and communicate them further on to the use. Another example:

“A network status may indicate that a wireless device is on a 3G network and has three bars, or that the device does not currently have access to cellular service.”

Apparently Apple is thinking of integrating this technology via an app. Users will be able to download it and then have their network information delivered to them at fixed times.

"In some embodiments, the software may be provided to the device as an app that may be obtained through an online store. The app may allow for phone from several operating systems and/or networks to all see each others' signal strength and status."

The patent application was filed back in December 2010 and is property of Fletcher Rothkopf, who’s a design manager.
