Text message colors

Hi! Why is that some text message appear in green
And now with my new iPhone 4s others appear with a blue highlight!?

The green shows when texting someone that doesn't have an iPhone. Blue will show when texting iPhone users. They have to have the latest OS though. I think.

Green is a text message and blue is an iMessage.
iMessage only works if both iPhones have iOS 5 installed and you have a data signal.

@darkstar, if it utilizes a data single does that mean you are transmitting data (using the data plan) while sending text?

I thought iMessage was free texting with iOS 5, as long as the other person I'm texting is also using iOS 5? No data applied? Am I wrong?

Free as in it doesn't count towards your "text messages."

So this blue/ green thing. It was working with my hubby and our phones but now it's green only. How come some of my friends phones go thru. One friend the iMessage changes to text message after I send it. Is this the data thing?
