AppleInsider reports today that Samsung has once again taken over the top spot of the global smartphone market in the March quarter, with Apple being pushed down into second place.

According to TrendForce, Samsung had 26.1% of production volume in the quarter and Apple had 16.9%, representing a big turnaround from the December quarter when Apple had 20.3% and Samsung had 18.5%.

Samsung’s success comes despite the Galaxy Note 7 recall debacle, with TrendForce saying that Samsung’s low- to mid-range segment has continued to do well, with the relatively cheap Galaxy J series helping Samsung become “the only brand that saw positive growth in production volume during the off season of the first quarter,” according to TrendForce.

In the March quarter iPhone production dropped by 36% from the December quarter, representing a drop of 41% year-over-year, said TrendForce, which also noted that Apple had an overall increase in sales, some of which was due to the success of the (Product)Red iPhone 7.

The results could be misleading in that Apple does not make lower end smartphones like Samsung. From the point of view of the shareholders, net profit is more important than total units sold. Samsung sells more phones but Apple has most of the profit.

Exactly, selling a billion phones at $0.01 profit just means you sell a lot of cheap phones, I think if Samsung charged enough to make Apples profit the wouldn't sell very many phones at all.

Exactly this. Thanks for the insight Gentleman. I wish more would understand this simple concept. [emoji1474][emoji41]
