redlaser app on 3gs

i downloaded the redlaser and other code scanner apps and cant get them to scan any ideas? im thinking its a focus problem its my first i phone and ive only had it a week but im assuming thers no focus on the camera. the redlaser app says tap barcode to scan but you tap and nothing happens
