id Software supremo John Carmack has written a blog post about his long-awaited shooter RAGE on iPhone, which according to Pocket Gamer, reveals the incredible news that the game will be out on the iOS platforms by the end of November, way before the console versions, just as Carmack stated back at Quakecon a few weeks ago, when he first unveiled the jawdropping tech demo of RAGE running on iPhone 4. Even better is the news that the game is set to cost just $0.99 for the standard version and $1.99 for the HD iPad and iPhone 4 Retina Display version.

Elsewhere in the blog post, Carmack says that the iOS version of the game will not be the full game – because that would require the full power of a PC, Mac or console to run, but it will be using the RAGE engine and development technology. It will be a very big game indeed, with the HD version being approximately 1.5GB to download. The gameplay will be based around Mutant Bash TV, a post apocalyptic combat game show, where the object is to try and make it to the end of the level with a higher score than last time. All the usual fun shooter elements are there, including head shots, pickups and hit streak multipliers. According to Carmack, there is no real story or character development, unlike the full game, as it’s meant to be played over and over.

So, not the full game then, but it certainly shows how the iPhone and iPad has changed the world of videogaming, to think that one of the most anticipated video games of recent years will be making its debut, at least in part, on the iOS platform. Quite incredible.
