I’ll never get tired of the way the games that everyone’s been waiting for just pop up onto the App Store without a word of warning. The gaming world has been waiting for RAGE, the latest shooter from Quake-sters id Software and John Carmack literally for years, and now iOS device owners get to experience a considerable slice of it way before console or PC owners, for a ridiculously low price too. Make no mistake, this is a significant moment in the development of mobile gaming. Be prepared to be patient while it downloads though! As Pocket Gamer points out today, RAGE is a sizable beast indeed – the Standard Definition version is a whopping 536MB, and the HD version is 700MB plus.

What fans can expect once the game finally downloads, is a graphically stunning on-rails shooter intended to serve as an introduction to the post-apocalyptic world of the full open-world console version, which is not due for almost another year. In the game, you get to star in a horrific game show, where you're stalked by hungry mutants. Fortunately though, you don't have to face the mutants unarmed, you get to blast them with either a pistol, shotgun or machine gun, as its kill or be killed on your terrifying journey through three levels: the Tenements, the Asylum and the Bunker.

As good as all that sounds, that's nothing compared to the sheer thrill of getting your hands dirty and playing RAGE, particularly the HD version, which is simply, staggeringly jaw-dropping. Not only does it look incredible, it plays effortlessly too, with spot on controls that render it simply a joy to play for FPS fans. An astounding achievement in gaming, more than worthy of the hype and then some.

RAGE is available for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, and you can download the SD version here for $0.99/£0.59 and the HD version here for $1.99/£1.19. Both versions are compatible will most iOS devices, although check the “Requirements” section just to be sure before you buy. Also note that the game has a 12+ age rating.
