A couple of times recently my 3GS has frozen. It happens when I am downloading a web page and the screen freezes for several minutes. During that time I can't close the app neither can I perform a reboot. Eventually the frozen screen disappears to b replaced by the apple logo. After another few minutes the phone does boot up and everything is back to normal. What is the likely cause of this?

The phone being old is probably the cause of this.
Either way...no matter what freezes..you can *always* reboot by holding the home+power button simultaneously for 10 seconds.
But since this keeps happening, I would restore in iTunes to the latest iOS version. iTunes should do so automatically.
In order to *truly* get rid of the problem, it is best you restore and *setup as new device* and *NOT* restore from a backup.
If the problem persist after restoring and setting up as new device (not using and iCloud/iTunes backup), then that rules out a software problem....meaning your device has a hardware problem.
