I have an iPhone 5c and went abroad to Greece.
I flew back yesterday and at the airport in Greece the phone was still working perfectly.
I put the phone onto Airplane Mode for the flight and took Airplane Mode off when I reach the UK.
The phone now shows no service.
I've tried switching off and switching on again and airplane Mode on again and off again but I still get no service,
I have checked with my carrier and it is not my carrier.

A few things to try:

Make sure Cellular Data is enabled.
Restart your iPhone - turn it off and on again.
Remove the SIM card and insert it.
Check for a carrier settings update.
Make sure your iPhone is up to date (iOS 8.3 for your device).

If all of this fails to help, restore your iPhone, using iTunes.

Hope that helps.

Thank you for your help.
How do I check for a carrier update please?
Also if all fails what do I lose on a restore ?

When you connect your iPhone to iTunes, you'll get a notification if there's a software update for your carrier.

If there's a backup, you won't lose settings, apps or music/movies,... purchased from the iTunes Store.
Here's information what's included in a backup (iCloud or iTunes):

Good Mornig J A - I tried everything recommend but nothing would restore service so I followed the last resort advice and backed up and restored and service was restored
Thank you so much for your help - it is much appreciated.

The carrier updates show in the "about" section of settings >General >about.
Try Reset Network Settings.
Reset Network Settings
Settings>General>Reset>Tap Reset Network Settings. You may need to enter your wifi passcode back in afterwards.
